Baymax stole the hearts of some of Hollywood’s staunchest critics with Big Hero 6 winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
The movie, directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams, tells the story of Hiro, voiced by Ryan Potter, and his robot, Baymax, voiced by Scott Adsit, grossed $521.2 million worldwide and is Disney’s first animated film foray into the Marvel comics universe, fusing Japanese influences into American pop culture.
This also marks the studio’s seventh win in the past eight years for Best Animated Feature. Last year, the well-loved Frozen took home the prize. “This has been an amazing year for animated films and we are privileged to be in your company,” said co-director Don Hall who also took the opportunity to thank his parents. “One upon a time there was a freckle-faced little boy who told his mom and his dad he was going to work at Walt Disney Animation and they did something amazing.
They supported him,” Hall added. Baymax and Hiro beat their rivals from How to Train Your Dragon 2, The Boxtrolls, Song of The Sea, and The Tale of Princess Kaguya. Some believe that the absence of an entry from Pixar, Disney’s traditional rival in the animation category since the award was first handed out in 2002, likely helped clinch victory for Big Hero 6. Earlier this year, Hollywood was also surprised by the snub of The Lego Movie by Warner Bros; another possible factor for this year’s Oscar win.
