LA Revilla (Kuroko of the philippines basketball) converts crucial baskets in the clutch as KIA Carnival takes
down the Commissioner's Cup defending champions Purefoods Star Hotshots
7-foot-3 import PJ Ramos scored 32 points but got plenty of support, especially from pint-sized point guard LA Revilla, who had 18 points and seven assists in the victory.
Eloy Poligrates added 15 points while Kia player-coach finally scored a first point in his PBA career after hitting a free throw in the second quarter.
Kia, which picked up a second win after earlier upsetting Philippine Cup champs San Miguel, did it by taking control of a surprising fourth quarter that they won, 27-9.
Kia looked like it would be in a bad position after Purefoods import Daniel Orton fished the fifth personal foul of Ramos with 10:07 still left to play in the fourth period. Orton extended the lead with a split from the free throw line to make it a 76-68 advantage.
But the Kia braintrust decided to leave Ramos on the floor and he quickly barreled his way into the post for two points. Kyle Pascual added a jumper and JR Cawaling drained a three-pointer from the left corner to bring the Carnival within one, 76-75.
Yousef Taha sank a jumpshot from the right elbow but Ramos went right back to work for Kia, finishing over two defenders. Eloy Poligrates then beat the Hotshots down the floor for a tough reverse layup in transition that finally gave the Carnival the lead, 79-78, at the seven-minute mark of the final period.
Purefoods scored four consecutive points courtesy of Marc Pingris and Joe Devance. But Kia came right back as Ramos answered with five in a row. He split from the line and then hit back-to-back baskets both off of Revilla passes.
Revilla then scored a basket of his own for good measure, taking a hand-off from Mark Yee and driving baseline for two points plus a foul. His free throw made it, 87-82, for the Carnival with 1:41 remaining.
Poligrates then came up with a big shot, knocking down another three-pointer to give Kia a 90-82 advantage with 1:14 left on the clock. After a quick basket from Barroca, Revilla once again came up big, adding another triple to make it 93-84 inside the final minute.
Kia led the way after the first period with some steady play from their backcourt. Revilla and Leo Avenido combined to score the Carnival’s first 10 points and Poligrates gave the team a boost, knocking down back-to-back threes late in the quarter.
They led, 21-19, despite Purefoods’ Mick Pennisi nailing a trey of his own to close the period.
Pennisi, PJ Simon and Allein Maliksi all connected on long range bombs early in the second, though, as the Hotshots took control of the game.
Despite Ramos doing his darnedest in the period, Purefoods took leads of as high as eight points.
Ramos already had 17 points – 12 of them in the second – and 17 rebounds in the first half while counterpart Orton only scored three but Purefoods still managed to stay in front, 50-44, behind 12 points from Mark Barroca.
Kia came back to within two points after Avenido and Kyle Pascual scored five consecutive points to bring the Carnival as close as 58-56.
But the Hotshots were able to respond and restored the lead to 75-68 at the end of the third.
