When social media is put into good use, amazing things become possible as in the case of a boy and his dog who earned the attention and concern of several people on social media after a certain Gen Pilar posted some photos of them on Facebook showing the two ‘bosom buddies‘ sleeping in such sweet embrace in a public space.
The photos of the boy and his dog, Rommel Quimenales and Badji, respectively, had the caption: “A dog doesn’t care if you are rich or poor. All he knows is that he loves you very much.”
The viral boy and his dog also caught the interest of Coconuts Manila; hence, they searched for the 11-year-old boy who roams the street with his best buddy and found them wandering outside GMA Network’s headquarters.
According to Coconuts Manila, Rommel found the dog in Bulacan a month ago; who, like him, is also a drifter on the streets.
He named his new-found friend Badji; apparently to serve as a reminder of his brother Adji whom he lost in 2010 when they were begging in Muralla, Bulacan.
“Mahirap mawalan ng kadugo, umiyak-iyak lang ako noon hinanap-hanap ko, kasi naglaho lang siya eh,” Rommel shared; pertaining to the brother he misses. [It’s hard to lose a kin, I cried because he just disappeared.] Badji turned out to be his sparring partner in their street life; saying, “Siya lang ang nakilala ko na kahit anong mangyari, hindi ako iniiwan, parang tao.” [He is the only one I know who won’t ever forsake me.] However, despite living and sleeping in the streets, Rommel is not really homeless as he has an older sister and brother-in-law in San Jose, Del Monte, Bulacan and an older brother who also has his own family. He had resorted to begging at a very tender age to support himself and somehow help his sister who earns so little as a server in an eatery. Their parents have separated, Rommel disclosed, since they were younger; with his father opting to leave them for another woman and his mother also falling for another guy whom the boy described as a drunkard.
Rommel shared that he has no choice but to do what what he can. Thus, feeling determined, he strived to go back to school; having reached only Grade 2. His story was so inspiring that it even got featured in Coconuts Manila and GMA’s Frontrow; thus, inspiring many more. Several online users have expressed intention to help Rommel and his dog, and some have even offered to take Rommel into their care as the boy shows serious intent to study. Gen Pilar and Coconuts Manila have been receiving a lot of calls and messages pertaining to assistance, and it is highly hoped that the boy and his dog will be comfortably settled very very soon. Let’s get to know the boy and his dog more through these videos shared by Coconuts Manila and GMA: They were also featured in GMA’s Front Row last June 8:
