Microsoft has finally announced when it will be rolling out the newest version of Windows: July 29th will be the big day. To prepare for the date, Microsoft is sending out notifications to users of older versions prompting them to reserve their free copy.
The reservation process is simply a way to opt-in to the free upgrade ahead of time. Once it becomes available, if you’ve opted-in, the update will automatically download and install for free. Microsoft hasn’t yet explained any details about how, when, or if the company will start charging for Windows, however it seems likely that you’ll still have a chance to get the free upgrade if you don’t reserve it now. However, if you know you’ll be upgrading, it’s a handy way to expedite the process once July 29th rolls around.
If you’re still on the fence about whether or not you want to install Windows 10, here’s everything you need to know.
Today Microsoft has confirmed to me that those ineligible for a free Windows 10 upgrade (that’s millions and includes some editions of Windows 7 and Windows 8) will have to pay a hefty price: Windows 10 Home will retail from $119 while Windows 10 Professional carries a price tag of $199. A Windows 10 Pro Pack, which enables you to upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Professional, will be available for $99.
Interestingly these prices are actually more than a new listing from accredited Microsoft reseller Newegg which states Windows 10 Home will retail for $109 while Windows 10 Professional will cost far less at $149. Whether that will be adjusted remains to be seen.
In the past Microsoft has run first year promotions whereby any early adopter could get new Windows editions for substantially less, but it seems this won’t happen here. In a way that’s understandable considering the number of free upgrades the company will be giving out.
The Windows 10 upgrade is designed to be compatible with your current Windows device and applications*. We are hard at work to make this upgrade process a great experience. You can reserve your free Windows 10 upgrade now through a simple reservation process. Look for this icon in your system tray at the bottom of your screen, simply click on the icon, and then complete the reservation process. You can find more details on how this works at Windows.com.
